The Golden Mile: a buyer's guide

The Golden Mile is the coastal stretch between Marbella's old town and Puerto Banús. It is where the town's resort reputation was made in the 1950s, and it remains the address most international buyers ask about first.

Where it is

The Golden Mile runs west from the edge of Marbella town to the Río Verde, just short of Puerto Banús, along the coast road now named Bulevar Príncipe Alfonso von Hohenlohe. It is closer to four kilometres than one; the name is a description of the real estate, not the distance.

The road divides it. On the sea side are the beachside resorts, the promenade and low-rise apartment communities. On the mountain side, the land climbs quickly towards La Concha, and the villa neighbourhoods of Sierra Blanca, Nagüeles and Cascada de Camoján sit on the slopes with views back over the coast.

How it came to be

In 1954 Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club, a small hotel built around his family's finca, and the guests it attracted turned a fishing town into a resort. The Puente Romano hotel followed in the 1970s a little further west, taking its name from the small Roman bridge on its grounds. Both are still open, and much of the Golden Mile's housing grew up around them.

The result is an area that was planned around villas and gardens rather than density. Plot sizes on the hillside are large, and even the beachside apartment communities tend to be low-rise and set in mature grounds.

What you will find there

Beachside: apartments and penthouses in gated communities along the promenade, the residences attached to the Marbella Club and Puente Romano, and a handful of frontline villas. This is the part of Marbella where you can walk to a beach club, restaurants and the tennis club without a car.

Hillside: detached villas on large plots, from older Andalusian-style houses to new contemporary builds, in gated urbanisations with their own security. Sierra Blanca and Cascada de Camoján are the best known; both are a short drive rather than a walk from the beach.

Prices are among the highest on the Costa del Sol, and the spread within the area is wide. A renovated beachside apartment and a new hillside villa are different markets that happen to share a postcode, which is one reason agents tend to specialise in one side or the other.

Who it suits

Buyers who want the established, walkable version of Marbella, and who value being between the old town and Puerto Banús rather than in either. Second-home owners who will visit often and want low-maintenance beachside living. Families who want space and views and are happy to drive.

It suits less well anyone chasing new-build value, golf-frontline living or quiet; for those, Nueva Andalucía, Benahavís and East Marbella each make a stronger case.

Practicalities

The A-7 coast road runs through the area and is the main artery east to Málaga airport (about 45 minutes in normal traffic) and west to Estepona. The AP-7 toll motorway runs inland behind the hillside neighbourhoods and is the quicker route when the coast road is busy in summer.

The promenade connects the Golden Mile to Marbella's old town in one direction and Puerto Banús in the other; it is flat and popular for walking and cycling. International schools serve the area from the hillside and from Nueva Andalucía next door.

Choosing an estate agent on the Golden Mile

12 of the 21 agencies in our directory that list the Golden Mile as an area they serve actually have an office there. That matters more than the coverage claim: an agent based on the strip will know which communities are quiet, which are rented out in summer, and what has sold recently on each side of the road. Between them, the locally based agencies work in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Swedish.

Questions worth asking any of them: how many of their current listings are on the Golden Mile itself, whether they act for the seller on those, and how they are paid. Nothing on this page is influenced by who has claimed a profile or paid for anything.
